GALILEO’S SEND OFF > UMOJA’S TOUCH DOWN

The Galileo Decommissioning Project (GDP) is one of the key initiatives being implemented by the Department of Field Support in close collaboration with Umoja. GDP was officially launched in December 2016 as part of Phase 1 of Umoja Extension 2 (UE2), with the objective of migrating the UN Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions inventory and fleet management data from the current system (Galileo), to the UN’s enterprise resource management system (Umoja). The solution is scheduled for deployment at the beginning of September 2017.

Taking into account the delivery challenges associated with such a large-scale business transformation initiative, and the significant impact on the day to day work of staff, the GDP Solution Design and Change Management teams conducted a series of workshops in the missions to initiate knowledge transfer. Over the course of five weeks in May and June 2017, the GDP team visited 20 peacekeeping and special political missions, as well as three offices away from headquarters, and delivered training. According to Fuad Mohammednur, a workshop participant from MONUSCO - “the workshop provided an overview of the main changes in business processes and an opportunity to discuss the impact of Umoja on the everyday activities of missions, which is key in preparing for post-Galileo life.”

In many ways, the September go-live will mark the start of a new way to manage logistics, property management and service delivery functions. For more information on GDP, read the latest Umoja blog.
